In April of 1942, the war had taken a turn for the worst, and it seemed unlikely that Nazi Germany would rise victorious. In an office of Mauthausen concentration camp, five men of the Nazi-fascist army met: a Croatian officer, a Spaniard, an Italian officer, a Canadian, and an SS official, with a sixth man as a prisoner a Jewish banker.
